Stretches That Help Prevent Sports Injuries

Warming up your muscles with light stretches before and after a workout prepares your body for movement. Our team of experts at Advanced Medical Solutions are leaders in innovative medicine in Myrtle Beach and will customize a stretching program especially for you.

Why Is Stretching Important?

Dynamic stretching, holding a stretch for a short period of time, is an important part of a strong, mobile body. When your muscles are flexible, they are longer and help you maintain a full range of motion. If the muscles are short and tight, they cannot extend all the way necessary, causing muscle damage, joint pain, and uncomfortable strains. Stretching also assists in pain relief, especially after strenuous physical activity.

3 Effective Stretches to Prevent Sports Injuries

  • Toe Touch: Loosen up the backs of your legs, hips, and calves by touching your toes. Stand in an upright position with your feet shoulder-width apart. Extend your hands above your head, take a deep breath, and slowly fall forward, reaching for your toes. Go as far as you can and take two to three deep breaths, then slowly return to a standing position. Repeat.
  • Arm Stretch: This stretch increases the flexibility of your arms and upper back muscles. Extend both arms out in front of you. Bend the left arm and place it underneath the right arm that is still extended. Use the left arm to slowly take the right arm across your chest until you feel a slight stretch. Take two to three breaths and repeat with the right arm.
  • Neck Stretch: Take the right arm over your head, bend your arm, and put your middle finger on your ear. Slowly pull your head down to your shoulder until you feel a stretch and hold for a few seconds. Repeat on the other side.
